Watch for weak heat, frequent on/off cycles, new rattles or bangs, yellow burner flames (where visible/applicable), or a furnace that needs multiple resets.
Dusty burning smells at first startup of the season can be normal briefly; persistent burning or electrical smells deserve a shutdown and a service request.
Gas odour is an emergency: evacuate and contact your gas utility or emergency services before arranging HVAC service.
